Loved slow letters, wanted more?

Slowly is a pen-pal app, and a good one. Ember is a dating app built around one sealed letter a day, live translation and ID-verified people. An honest comparison, for anyone who wanted a letter to become something.

What Slowly does well.

Slowly made writing to a stranger feel like something again. Letters take hours or days to arrive, so people write properly, and the slow pace attracts thoughtful people from everywhere. If you want friendship, language practice or a quiet correspondence with no expectation of anything more, Slowly is the better choice. It is a pen-pal app by design, not a dating app.

Where it stops short if you wanted romance.

Plenty of people who write letters would, quietly, have liked one to turn into something. That is not what Slowly is for, and it shows in a few ways:

  • You cannot know the person is who they say they are. Nothing checks an ID, so trust is built on words alone, and words are exactly what a scammer is good at.
  • There is no way to hear or see each other without leaving the app, so the moment things get real, someone asks for a phone number or another messaging app.
  • A letter can be a few lines long, and when it is, waiting a day for it stings.
  • Romantic intent has to be hidden or hinted at, because the community is platonic by design.

How a letter works on Ember.

Ember's Letters are built so that the waiting is worth it. Tap through the three steps.

Write one letter. One a day per match, between 100 and 1,000 words. There is a prompt if you want one, and you can keep it as a draft and come back.

It stays sealed. Your match sees that a letter is waiting, not what it says. Neither of you can read the other's letter until you have both written one.

Open together. Both letters open at once, each translated into the reader's language. The next one can begin the following day.

Letters sit beside the normal chat, so a match can write letters one day a week and message the rest, or do nothing but letters for a month. Voice and video calls are built in for when a letter turns into wanting to hear a voice.

Side by side.
